How to Handle E-ZPass Toll-by-Mail Charges for Turo Vehicles
Learn how to verify an E-ZPass network Toll-by-Mail notice, match it to a Turo reservation, and avoid duplicate charges.
E-ZPass is a multi-state network of member agencies, so a Toll-by-Mail or plate-based notice is issued under the rules of the authority where travel occurred. Turo hosts should identify that agency first rather than relying on a generic E-ZPass procedure — see E-ZPass Reconciliation for the transponder-based side of this same problem.
Verify the issuing authority, and understand why plate billing occurred
Confirm the road, bridge, tunnel, or agency named on the notice, navigate independently to the authority's official website, and verify the citation or invoice number — be cautious with unexpected text messages demanding immediate toll payment. Plate billing can happen because no transponder was present, the transponder wasn't read, the device or account was inactive, the plate was missing or incorrect on the account, the vehicle/tag class was wrong, or the crossing used a plate-based billing process by design. Only the issuing agency can confirm the actual reason.
Match the notice to a reservation, and search for the original transaction
Record the plate, transaction date and time, location, amount, agency, and notice number, then compare the travel timestamp with the vehicle's reservation history and actual possession timeline. Before creating a new charge, check the E-ZPass account and previous imports — a notice may correspond to a transponder charge already recorded or a crossing included in another statement.
Separate toll and penalty amounts, and respond to both systems
Itemize base tolls, administrative fees, and late penalties, and determine whether any extra cost resulted from outdated fleet account data or delayed owner action — request only amounts allowed by Turo's current policy. Pay or contest the notice through the issuing agency by its deadline, and separately prepare the reservation match and supporting evidence for Turo within the platform's current reimbursement window.
Improve future records
Audit plates, transponder status, vehicle class, mounting, and historical assignments, and reconcile frequently enough to find unread-tag transactions before penalties accumulate. Kelviz can bring E-ZPass exports, plate-based notices, reservation windows, and review decisions into one recovery workflow.
