How to Match SunPass Tolls to Turo Trips

A practical workflow for matching SunPass or Toll-by-Plate transactions to the correct Turo vehicle, reservation, and guest.

By Kenneth Elliott

To match a SunPass charge to a Turo trip, start with the transaction's vehicle identifier and travel time, then identify which reservation had that vehicle when the toll occurred — don't match by statement date or memory alone. SunPass account tools and export options can change, so follow the current instructions in the official SunPass portal.

Gather the two sides of the match

From the toll side, you need the transaction date and time, the plaza/gantry/roadway/location, the amount, the transponder or plate, and the source account or notice. From the reservation side, you need the vehicle and plate, trip start and end times, the reservation identifier, and a guest reference.

Use the travel date, not just the posting date

Provider activity may show more than one date — the time the vehicle actually traveled through the toll point is the key matching event. Posting and statement dates are useful for auditing but shouldn't replace the transaction time.

Match in a safe order

Normalize the plate and transponder identifiers, identify the vehicle associated with the transaction, find the reservation active at the transaction timestamp, confirm there's only one reasonable candidate, check for delivery/repositioning/personal-use periods, preserve the source record, and mark uncertain results for review.

Handle Toll-by-Plate separately, and prevent duplicates

Florida transactions may reach an operator through plate-based billing rather than a transponder record — use the plate, transaction date, location, and amount, and don't add penalties created by the host's own late account maintenance unless Turo's current policy makes them eligible. The same transaction can also appear in both an online account view and a later statement or notice: use a provider transaction ID when available, otherwise compare the account, plate/transponder, date, time, location, and amount before creating a new record.

Prepare the reimbursement case

After matching, confirm the charge falls within the guest's trip and Turo's current rules, attach the required documentation, and submit it through Turo before the applicable deadline.
