How to Handle Toll-by-Plate Charges From a Turo Trip

Learn how to match a mailed or online Toll-by-Plate charge to a Turo reservation, avoid duplicates, and document reimbursement.

By Kenneth Elliott

A Toll-by-Plate charge is associated with the vehicle's license plate rather than a successfully read transponder. The registered owner may receive the notice after the guest's trip, leaving the host to identify the reservation and respond before both agency and reimbursement deadlines expire.

Verify the notice

Confirm the document or online record shows the issuing toll authority, license plate and state, vehicle description (if included), transaction date and time, toll location, base toll, administrative or penalty amounts, and the notice/payment due dates. Use the authority's official website or contact information — not a link from an unexpected text or email — to verify suspicious notices.

Match the charge to a trip

Locate the vehicle in your reservation history and compare the transaction timestamp to the trip window. Check delivery, pickup, return, maintenance, and vehicle-movement records when the time falls near a reservation boundary. A notice addressed to the host doesn't establish guest responsibility by itself — the travel record has to connect the vehicle and time to the reservation.

Separate the toll from added fees, and check for duplicate billing

Identify the original toll amount separately from invoice, administrative, or late fees — Turo's current policy determines what can be requested from a guest, and a fee caused by the host's own failure to maintain an account or pay on time shouldn't automatically be passed through. Before creating a new reimbursement item, search for a transponder transaction for the same crossing, a prior statement import, a previously submitted guest invoice, or a notice that combines several earlier transactions.

Pay or contest the authority separately

The toll authority's deadline and Turo's reimbursement process are separate. Protect the vehicle owner's rights by paying or contesting the notice through the official agency process while pursuing reimbursement through Turo.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I receive Toll-by-Plate when the car had a transponder?

Possible causes include an unread transponder, an incorrect plate or vehicle record, device placement, account status, or agency-specific processing — contact the issuing authority for the actual reason.

Can I charge the guest for late fees?

Only request amounts eligible under Turo's current policy and supported by the facts — don't automatically transfer host-caused penalties.

What if the notice arrives after Turo's normal toll window?

Review the current policy and contact Turo support. Don't change the transaction date or submit misleading documentation.
