What Happens When a Toll Has the Wrong License Plate?

A toll showing the wrong plate isn't safe to bill as-is. The mismatch can come from a simple formatting error, outdated provider data, a camera misread, a plate transfer, a transponder conflict, or — less often — plate cloning. Preserve the original provider transaction, notice, plate image if available, timestamp, location, transponder, amount, and vehicle description rather than "correcting" the source field by overwriting it.

Check normalization before assuming it's a real mismatch

Compare plates after removing spaces, dashes, and case differences, and watch for common character confusion like O and 0, I and 1, or B and 8 — while keeping the plate's state in the comparison, since two states can issue the same plate string. This is exactly the kind of normalization gap that produces a false non-match, not just a false match.

Review plate history, and compare the transponder

Confirm which vehicle actually held the plate on the travel date — a current vehicle record can't explain a historical plate transfer or replacement. If the transponder identifies a fleet vehicle but the plate doesn't, review the historical tag assignment and the toll authority's account data rather than assuming the transponder is automatically the correct signal.

Inspect images, and dispute through the authority when needed

If the toll authority provides an image, compare make, model, color, body type, and visible plate — a different vehicle in the photo can indicate a misread or a cloned plate. Follow the provider's official dispute procedure and deadline, and preserve any police or motor-vehicle report if plate theft or cloning is suspected.

Don't invoice until the match is resolved

Without a reliable vehicle match, the reservation link is defective — keep the charge in review or mark it ineligible until the evidence supports a correction.
