Can a Turo Host Charge a Guest for Towing and Impound Fees?
Learn how hosts should document towing and impound costs, determine cause and timing, protect the vehicle, and follow Turo reimbursement rules.
A guest may be responsible for towing or impound costs caused by improper parking or prohibited conduct during a Turo trip, but not every tow is guest-caused. The facts, tow authority, local law, and Turo's current policy determine whether reimbursement is appropriate.
Recover and protect the vehicle first
Verify the tow yard through the police, property owner, municipal system, or official posted information, and ask for the tow authorization/reason, storage location and release requirements, itemized tow and storage charges, daily storage rate, payment methods, deadline or lien-sale information, and required ownership/agency documents. Act promptly to limit avoidable storage charges while preserving any right to contest an unlawful tow.
Determine why the vehicle was towed
Possible causes include illegal or unauthorized guest parking, abandonment after the trip, arrest or traffic enforcement, collision or mechanical failure, repossession or owner-account issue, expired registration or vehicle compliance, or the host's own pickup/delivery choices. Don't charge the guest merely because the vehicle was on a reservation — document the cause.
Build the timeline, and separate eligible from avoidable costs
Record trip start, scheduled end, actual return, tow time, tow location, notice time, recovery time, and storage days, preserving Turo messages, check-in photos, parking disclosures, tow paperwork, receipts, and police or property records where available. Itemize the base tow, mandatory administrative charges, storage, release costs, citations, transportation, and other expenses — Turo policy may treat them differently, and storage accumulated because the host waited unnecessarily may not be reasonably attributable to the guest.
Use the correct Turo process
Towing can overlap tickets, late return, improper parking, or damage. Follow Turo's current instructions for the actual event rather than forcing every cost into a ticket invoice, and contact Turo support when the vehicle remains in a tow yard or authorization is required. Maintain the release letter, notarization if required, proof of ownership, tow invoice, payment receipt, citation, reservation match, Turo case, dispute, and reimbursement outcome. Kelviz can organize citations and trip-linked charges, but emergency vehicle recovery and Turo authorization should follow their official channels. See Towing and Impound Notices After a Turo Trip for the asset-recovery side of the same event.
