How Much Money Do Turo Hosts Lose From Unbilled Tolls?

Calculate your fleet's actual unbilled-toll exposure using transaction data, match rates, deadlines, disputes, and staff time — without relying on guesswork.

By Kenneth Elliott

There's no credible universal number for how much every Turo host loses from unbilled tolls — fleet size, location, guest travel, toll rates, provider delays, reconciliation frequency, and billing discipline vary too much. The useful question is: how much is your fleet failing to recover, and why?

Calculate direct unrecovered value

For a defined period: imported eligible tolls minus amounts submitted minus valid exclusions equals unresolved exposure. Then separate that exposure into still-within-window, unmatched, waiting for evidence, disputed, expired, and intentionally written off — never counting personal use, maintenance travel, duplicates, ineligible fees, or host-caused penalties as lost guest revenue.

Measure process leakage

Use a transaction-level audit rather than comparing only toll-account withdrawals with Turo payments — account totals can include several vehicles, non-trip use, corrections, credits, and fees. Track match rate, review completion rate, ready-to-bill conversion rate, submission rate, payment rate, dispute rate, and expiration rate.

Include labor carefully

Manual reconciliation also consumes staff time — measure actual hours spent downloading, cleaning, matching, reviewing, preparing evidence, submitting, and answering disputes, applying a documented labor cost rather than an invented industry average.

Example calculation

Suppose a fleet imports $1,200 in toll activity for the month. After removing $150 of owner use and $50 of duplicates or ineligible fees, $1,000 remains potentially guest-related. If $830 is submitted and $40 is intentionally written off, unresolved exposure is $130 — and that $130 isn't automatically recoverable profit; it still needs a deadline, evidence, guest-responsibility, and payment-outcome review.

Turn the analysis into action

Rank causes, not just totals. If most loss comes from late imports, change the cadence. If it comes from unknown tags, fix assignments. If cases are matched but not submitted, improve ownership and deadline alerts. Kelviz can help create the underlying statuses and reporting needed for a defensible calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I advertise an average savings figure?

Only if it comes from a documented and representative dataset with a disclosed methodology — avoid unsupported marketing statistics.

Is every unbilled toll a loss?

No. Some charges are ineligible, unrelated to guests, duplicated, disputed, or still being processed.
